Japan

I enjoyed Japan the few times I got there while I was in the Navy.  I only made it into Tokyo one evening for dinner.  Otherwise, I kept to the port cities of Yokosuka on Honshu, Japan’s biggest island, and Sasebo on Kyushu, Japan’s southern island, as well as Okinawa–the largest of a chain of small Japanese islands stretching from Kyushu to Taiwan.  Not counting Okinawa (which was controlled by the US for decades after the war), I found Japan a little difficult to navigate as far as language goes.  I was expecting everything to be catering to westerners abroad.  But that wasn’t so much the case.  Nonetheless, I found the cultural heritage intriguing.  Two things I really learned to love in Japan were yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) and onion rings, tempura-style.  I’d love to go back some day and explore the cities and sights of Honshu, the main island of Japan.
