South Korea

Sangwonsa, a Buddhist temple in Odaesan National Park, Pyeongchang, South Korea.

I only got to South Korea for one night when I was in the Navy.  Our plans had been altered as we were trying to sail around a typhoon, leaving us just one night in the port of Chinhae, on the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula.  I had a good Korean beef dinner at a restaurant just outside the base.  Then it was the kind of night you might imagine a shipload of sailors might have when they just have one night in port.  Chinhae is about as far as you can get in South Korea from its enormous, bustling capital, Seoul, in the northern part of the country.  I am determined to make it there one day on a tour of maritime nations of eastern Asia.

I made it back to South Korea in 2018.  You can get an overview of my trip to Taiwan and South Korea here.
