My 1st stop on Day 5 was Mercado Central, Valencia’s Central Market. It’s a mouthwatering place. Well, it is if you like food. I grabbed an ensaimada mini de azúcar. An ensaimada is a traditional roll from the Balearic Islands, off the coast of Valencia. It’s coiled and made with lard. A sprinkling of sugar gives it the azúcar.
Not long after eating the ensaimada, I sat down at an outdoor café opposite the market. I got the English breakfast, but with a Spanish twist. The English breakfast came with a choice of Spanish omelet, fried eggs, or scrambled eggs. So of course I got the Spanish omelet (omelet with potato). It was my 2nd Spanish omelet of the trip, and even more enjoyable than the 1st. That 1 was was basically fast food I got on the train to Valencia. Don’t get me wrong, that one was good too!
Did I really get a chocolate croissant less than an hour after getting the English breakfast, with the ensaimada coming not long before that? Seems strange. You’d think I wouldn’t have been hungry at that point. I wonder if maybe I hadn’t like 1 of the things I’d had earlier, like the roll, so I wanted to make up for it. And that would make my 3rd chocolate croissant just 5 days into the trip. But it does look pretty irresistible. Maybe that’s all it took.
Some yummy calamari to start off lunch at a beachfront restaurant.
And the main course at the beachfront restaurant–grilled chicken sandwich with cheese and a side of fries. Maybe not traditional, but satisfying.
It doesn’t seem like I had dinner that night. Maybe I was stuffed? Exhausted? Maybe that chocolate croissant is what put me over the edge.
