If there’s any city known for its views, it’s San Francisco.
Make no mistake. Beijing is not the cosmopolitan city that Shanghai is. (Unlike in Shanghai, I was often the only white person in sight on the subway in Beijing. I got stared at in Beijing at times. This never happened in Shanghai.) Regardless, imperial Beijing is where the history is. This is why the most spectacular sights I saw on my 2015 trip to China were for the most part in Beijing. I feel like my trip to China ended on a fantastic high. This was due to 3 reasons: the Summer Palace, the Peking Opera, and the dinner I had between the two. You’ll have to wait for the Food Diary to read about the dinner. The rest is below. [I have a lot of pictures from the Summer Palace because it was such a gorgeous site to tour. Please don’t skip the part about the opera at the end. It was by far one of the highlights of my trip, and there’s a video included that I really hope you watch!]
It was such a relief to stay in Shanghai for the day rather than taking another day trip. Because my arrival in Shanghai was delayed a day and I was departing for Beijing the next afternoon, this was my only full day in Shanghai. And full it was, a complete tour of central Shanghai.
I started the day in People’s Park, directly across from the hotel. People’s Park and adjacent People’s Square, where I wandered looking for my hotel late on Night 1, were built on the former site of a British racecourse for horse racing. Such an establishment was way to Western and decadent for the Communists, so it was demolished after they seized power in 1949.
